Unembedded Indirect Discourse

چکیده
This paper contributes to two debates: (i) the debate about whether or not ancient Greek has Free Indirect Discourse (FID), and (ii) the debate about how we should analyze FID semantically. We do this by showing that there is a distinction between FID and what we call Unembedded Indirect Discourse (UID). The semantic analysis that we develop for the latter shows that the two phenomena, though superficially similar, are semantically fundamentally different. We conclude that UID would have been more deserving of the title ‘free indirect discourse’ than the more quotative and direct discourse-like narrative technique that is now confusingly called so.

Indirect Discourse : Parataxis , the Propositional Function Modification
In “On Saying That,” Donald Davidson offered an analysis of indirect discourse that was meant to overcome the classic difficulties of a semantic theory of indirect discourse. Additionally, Davidson’s treatment of indirect discourse was purported to further his project of explaining meaning in a purely extensional, explicitly truth-defined, and compositional manner. The particular paratactic the...

In his article "Indirect Discourse in German, Russian, and English" Henry Whittlesey Schroeder analyzes the different tenses of indirect discourse in these three languages. Indirect discourse in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century adopts a different time in English, German and Russian. English indirect discourse reports in the preterit; German indirect discourse hovers in the subjunctiv...

A central aspect of language comprehension is that hearers integrate incoming linguistic content both with the rest of the current sentence and the larger discourse context. Presuppositions crucially interact with both intraand inter-sentential context in intricate ways, which makes their study especially useful in this regard. We present a series of experiments investigating the time-course of...
متن کاملIdentification of Direct/Indirect Discourse in Children's Stories
The automatic identification of direct and indirect discourses is a topic not yet explored in Natural Language Processing. We developed the DID system that when applied to children stories identifies the discourses, relative to the narrator (indirect discourse) or to the characters taking part in the story (direct discourse). This automation can be advantageous, namely when it is necessary to t...
متن کاملConversational Implicatures in Indirect Replies
I In this paper we present algorithms for the interpretation and generation of a kind of particu-larized conversational implicature occurring in certain indirect replies. Our algorithms make use of discourse expectations, discourse plans, and discourse relations. The algorithms calculate implica-tures of discourse units of one or more sentences. Our approach has several advantages. First, by ta...
